ABC Statement on Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are becoming increasingly integrated into healthcare and may support documentation, data analysis, and workflow efficiency within O&P practice. When used appropriately, AI has the potential to enhance efficiency and support patient care.

ABC agrees that AI is a supportive tool; however, the credentialed clinician must remain the primary decision-maker and is responsible for all clinical judgments, treatment plans, documentation, and care provided to the patient.

AI-generated documentation and recommendations must be reviewed, verified, and approved by the credential holder. Clinical decisions, including device selection and treatment recommendations, must be based on an appropriate patient evaluation and not solely on AI-generated outputs. While AI may assist in analyzing patient information and identifying potential treatment options, it cannot replace clinical reasoning, professional judgment, or the provider’s ability to justify medical necessity. Providers must be able to independently support and document the rationale for their clinical decisions.  The use of AI must prioritize patient safety and patient-centered care and remain consistent with the ABC Code of Professional Responsibility, Scope of Practice, and Patient Care Facility Accreditation Standards. ABC credential holders must only use AI applications that comply with applicable privacy and security regulations.

Due to the individualized and hands-on nature of orthotic, prosthetic and pedorthic care, AI cannot replace physical assessment, device fitting, or direct patient interaction. All ABC credentialed facilities and providers should establish appropriate safeguards to ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI technologies.
