ABC Award Recipient Helps to Highlight National Scoliosis Awareness Month

June marks a month-long campaign aimed at raising awareness about scoliosis and highlighting the need for public education and early detection. It also aims to unite patients, families, physicians and clinicians in partnerships that educate and advocate for the patient.

In honor of National Scoliosis Awareness Month, we are proud to highlight Kelly Moton, a recently certified ABC CPO whose National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) residency directed study project, Development of a Psycho-educational Support Group Program for Newly Braced Scoliosis Patients- A Pilot Study, earned her the 2025 ABC Resident Travel award. With this award, Moton was able to attend and present her research at the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (AAOP) 2025 Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium in Atlanta, February 26 - March 1.

Moton’s study examined supporting adolescents who recently received an orthosis following a scoliosis diagnosis. The psycho-educational support group program focused on helping adolescents cope with their diagnosis and accept their orthosis. Kelly’s study perfectly exemplifies the goals of National Scoliosis Awareness Month to increase awareness through education and provide valuable resources and support for those affected by this condition.
