CE Cycle Expiration Change FAQs

Going forward, all continuing education cycles will run April 1–March 31.

This change is effective immediately, and implementation is underway to update all existing records and
certificates by the end of spring 2026.

Certificates for newly certified individuals will now display the new March 31 expiration date.

Why does my coworker’s ABC certificate show a March 31 end date instead of December 31?

Until all credential holders receive their updated certificates (by the end of spring 2026), you may notice colleagues with different expiration dates.

Why is the continuing education cycle expiration date changing from December 31 to March 31?

In response to feedback from the profession, the new expiration date of March 31 helps address several challenges. This change provides additional time after the busy year-end and holiday season to complete CEUs, making the schedule more manageable for many credential holders. It also offers individuals greater flexibility in fulfilling their CE requirements, as well as the opportunity to attend national meetings routinely held in February and early March.

Is it true that continuing education cycle expiration dates are changing from December 31 to March 31?

If your credential expires December 31, 2025: Yes, the change has been approved and will be implemented with your next continuing education cycle. You must still complete the credit requirements for your current CE cycle by December 31, 2025. Your next cycle will begin January 1, 2026, and your new certificate will reflect the updated expiration date of March 31, 2031.

If your credential does not expire in 2025: Yes, ALL individual continuing education cycles will be advanced three months to the March 31 expiration date. New certificates reflecting that date will be mailed by the end of spring 2026.

Should I wait to get my CEUs until the new expiration date change is official?

No. Please continue to complete and submit your credits as usual. Your requirements have not changed. If you expire on December 31, 2025, and do not meet your continuing education credit requirements, your certification will be suspended.

Will my certificate and MY ABC account show the new expiration date?

Yes. All certificates and MY ABC accounts will be updated to reflect the March 31 expiration date.

What if I already recertified for my continuing education cycle ending December 31, 2025?

Your new CE cycle is January 1, 2026 and your expiration date is March 31, 2031. No additional action on your part is required.

Has the number of CEUs I’m required to earn changed?

No. The number of CEUs required remains the same.

What if I just got certified in 2025 and my certificate shows a December 31 expiration date – will I receive a new certificate with the new expiration date?

Yes. Everyone who is in the middle of their continuing education cycle, with a December 31, 2026 or later date, will receive a new certificate by end of spring 2026 that reflects the new March 31 expiration date.

When will I receive my new certificate?

We will begin mailing new certificates to all credential holders in spring 2026. We strongly encourage you to make sure your address is up to date in your MY ABC account

What happens after my expiration date changes to March 31?

Once your expiration date updates to March 31, you are required to meet your continuing education credits by that date. Your next continuing education cycle will begin on April 1 and end on March 31, five years later. This replaces the previous January 1–December 31 cycle format.
