Understanding DMEPOS Surety Bonds

By Devon Bernard

As a follow-up to our article about surety bonds in the last issue of the Facilitator, we asked AOPA’s Assistant Director of Coding and Reimbursement Services, Education and Programming, Devon Bernard, to share his knowledge and expertise about surety bonds with you.

Maintaining a Good Standing with ABC: It’s not just a status, it’s a requirement!

It is very important that all accredited facilities ensure that both their patient care facilities and patient care providers (individuals) are in good standing at all times. What does that mean exactly?

Surveyor Notes: A Closer Look at Patient Record Standards PR.6.1 and 6.1.1

Ted Markgren, CO, Senior Surveyor

As the complexity of orthotics and prosthetics advances, so too does the medical record. It is important to review the medical record requirements to ensure that your records reflects the device and need for the device accurately.

Featured Standard – HR.6: Privileging Certified or Licensed Staff

Effective January 1, 2019, the practice of privileging non-credentialed caregivers was eliminated. ABC’s Orthotic, Prosthetic and Pedorthic Scope of Practice has been updated to change the way individuals can be privileged to provide patient care.

Change of Ownership – How it Affects Your Accreditation

The type of ownership that is right for your business depends on your unique situation. As your business changes, so might your business or ownership structure.

Reminders

Privileging Changes Now in Effect!

Privileging of non-credentialed caregivers has been eliminated. The revised is available for review on the ABC website. Mastectomy facilities are exempt from this change.

Annual Fee

Your 2019 Annual Fee and Data Verification Form (DVF) was due to ABC on December 1. Invoices were emailed in September. Please note that these fees are different and separate from any fees related to an application or survey. If you are not current with your annual fees, your facility’s accreditation status will not be reported to Medicare and cannot be verified to third parties. Be sure to log in to your facility’s MY ABC account to verify that you are in good standing with ABC.
