As of January 1, 2006, eligibility requirements for professionals applying to become ABC Registered Orthotic Fitters will require completion of a written examination.
Eligibility requirements for 2006 and beyond will require all applicants to complete an approved orthotic educational seminar, obtain 1000 of practical experience and pass the examination.
The examination will be multiple-choice, covering all aspects involved in the fitting of non-custom, prefabricated orthotic devices. Details on the examination dates, times and locations are forthcoming.
Although a relatively new program, begun in 2003, the ABC fitter program has been widely accepted by O&P professionals. To date, over 3,100 individuals are in good standing as ABC fitters. With such an experienced cadre of professionals already credentialed, the addition of an examination requirement is a natural step for ensuring that the future quality of new orthotic fitters remains at the high level associated with ABC standards.
