Why ABC Accreditation?
The ABC accreditation process assists you in improving organizational consistency throughout your facility's operations by creating a minimum expectation for the organizational function and physical environment of your facility. Additionally, our onsite surveyors seek to provide a positive survey experience, one that is consultative and educational rather than impersonal and punitive. ABC's high standards and commitment to superior patient care make achieving accreditation with ABC a mark of exceptional quality.

Beyond reaching the highest standards in the profession, ABC accreditation also benefits your facility by reducing your risk of liability through compliance with ABC and Medicare's Supplier Standards and preparing you for potential Medicare audits.

How long does the process take?
The application approval process takes two to four weeks and we will notify you as soon as your facility has been approved for an onsite survey. Please note that your survey can occur as soon as 24 hours after your application has been processed. All first-time applicants will be surveyed within 90 days of application approval.

Once you are awarded accreditation, it can be valid for up to three years. To maintain your accreditation, you will need to submit an application for renewal along with your annual fee and be resurveyed.

Check the eligibility criteria below. Once you've determined that you meet the requirements and are ready for an onsite survey, submit your application!

 Eligibility

The following criteria will help you determine if you are eligible to apply for accreditation. While not a comprehensive list, it does cover the basic requirements that you need to have in place before you apply. The remaining eligibility requirements are identified throughout the standards themselves and are relevant to specific products and services your organization may provide.

Your organization must be:

  • Located within the United States, one of its territories or possessions, or is a Department of Defense medical treatment facility or program.
  • A formally organized and legally established business that provides the type(s) of DMEPOS patient care services for which you are applying.
  • Licensed according to applicable state and federal laws and regulations, and maintains all current legal authorization to operate.
  • Staffed with board certified or licensed personnel appropriate to the scope of services you provide.
  • Operational and have a minimum of 10* complete patient charts available at the time of the onsite survey.
  • Applying for ABC accreditation for all of the services it provides, regardless of whether Medicare is billed for these services. This requirement extends only to those services for which ABC offers accreditation.
  • Applying for ABC accreditation for all patient care locations and each location must be in an appropriate clinical setting. The decision of what is an appropriate clinical setting is solely within ABC's discretion.
  • Compliant with state licensure requirements.

*If the facility is newly established and has a limited patient care history, ABC may determine that a smaller number of complete patient charts is acceptable.

In addition, you must:

  • Clearly define the items and services you provide to patients, insurance companies, referral sources and regulatory bodies, including Medicare.
  • Comply with the ABC Code of Professional Responsibility.
  • Agree to the terms and conditions in the application materials.
  • Not falsify or misrepresent your accreditation status.

Note: If allowed by state law, Pharmacists are exempt from standard HR.4.1.

 Surveys

Once your accreditation application is approved, we will conduct an onsite survey.

CMS regulations require that all onsite surveys be unscheduled and unannounced. Onsite surveys will be conducted during your regular business hours, as indicated on your application. All ABC surveyors will present their photo identification badge upon their arrival.

By submitting your application, you affirm that your facility is ready for the onsite survey at any time. We are unable to rescheduled surveys due to emergency closure, staff unavailability or lack of readiness. If your facility will be closed for any reason, please inform ABC in writing.

Surveyors are assigned based on the programs indicated on your application. ABC site surveyors have education and training that qualifies them to evaluate the specific services you provide. Surveyors may be generalists or content specialists who are or were themselves practitioners or educators within the discipline represented by the program. Surveys are conducted by either a single surveyor or a team of surveyors. We may also send a surveyor apprentice as part of the survey team at no charge to you.

When preparing for your survey, be sure to have a comprehensive understanding of the ABC Facility Accreditation Standards and use the Relevant Standards Tool as a tool to help you focus on the specific standards that relate to your type of facility.
