The American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics (ABC) has been accrediting O&P organizations since 1948. To be accredited, organizations must comply with the requirements contained in the ABC Accreditation Guide and the appropriate ABC patient care standards.
The standards that organizations need to comply with in order to be ABC accredited creates minimum expectations for the physical environment and organizational function of orthotic, prosthetic and pedorthic patient care providers as well as those that supply other types of medical equipment. Standards are grouped into logical categories and include topics such as organizational process, patient care, performance management, product safety, facility safety and supplier compliance. Each of these categories contains multiple standards unique to the specific type of accreditation an organization is seeking. Why should facilities become accredited? The process of obtaining facility accreditation assists organizations in identifying inefficiencies and areas for improvement. The standards will improve organizational consistency throughout the facilities operations, including patient care and fabrication. Our on-site surveyors take a consultative approach to create more of an educational process rather than an impersonal, enforcement visit. ABC sets high standards for organizations so when a facility is accredited by ABC it is the mark of exceptional quality.
What is the cost to become accredited?Affordable accreditation is important for business owners and ABC's program is designed to be cost effective. As a not-for-profit organization, we strive to keep our costs contained and operate as efficiently as possible. This allows ABC to keep application and renewal fees low, especially when compared with other accrediting organizations.
ABC believes that the benefits of accreditation should accrue to the facility and its patients. In recognition of the ABC accreditation program, Cailor-Fleming has agreed to provide a 10% premium discount to any ABC accredited facility when it renews or initiates coverage through Cailor-Fleming. This policy is available only to ABC accredited facilities. Please call Don Foley at (800) 796-8495 for more information.
