Ever since a farm accident left him with an upper extremity amputation when he was 18 years old, Roy Davis, III, Ph.D. has had an interest in prosthetics. Davis has spent his career lecturing, researching and working as an engineer with a focus on orthotics and prosthetics. Now, as a public member of the ABC board of directors, Davis is ready to use his experiences to help provide consumer insight to those in the orthotic, prosthetic and pedorthic profession.
Davis has a Master’s degree and Ph.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. His degrees are in Engineering Mechanics with an emphasis on biomechanics, particularly related to how people move.
Davis has lectured and has been published worldwide on gait and motion studies. He is an accomplished researcher and former instructor for the Newington Certificate Program in Orthotics and Prosthetics’ Biomechanics course.
Currently, Davis works as the Director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory at Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville, S.C. He works with patients measuring the way they walk and determining what type of treatment plan they need.
Davis brings to the ABC board related experience in accreditation. He served on the board of the Commission for Motion Laboratory Accreditation where he helped develop accreditation criteria and guidelines for clinical motion analysis laboratories. “I am motivated to learn how accreditation and certification happens with ABC, and with my experience in accreditation I think I may have something to add to the discussion,” said Davis. “I look forward to working with like minded professionals to strengthen credentialing in prosthetics, orthotics and pedorthics.”
