About Dr. Kristi Wilson-Hill, Ph.D

ABC Public Member, 2006-present

Dr. Wilson Hill is a retired officer in the United States Army, commissioned through the ROTC program at Hampton University. She was designated a distinguished military graduate upon completion of her undergraduate degree program and went on to serve on active duty for nearly 5 years. As a result of a service-connected disability, Dr. Wilson Hill was medically retired from the military, and thereafter returned to graduate school.

Upon completion of her graduate and post-doctoral work she joined the faculty of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV), where she coordinated the research activities of the Spinal Cord Injury Model System. In that role, Dr. Wilson Hill worked with Federal and privately funded research, development and demonstration projects that addressed a broad spectrum of clinical and rehabilitation issues. This faculty experience also offered Kristi the opportunity to gain extensive training and teaching experience.

In 2001, Dr. Wilson Hill joined the staff of the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research at the US Department of Education. As a rehabilitation research administrator she managed an extensive and diverse portfolio of research and development projects, and coordinated the Small Business Innovation Research Program.

Dr. Wilson Hill also served as a Special Assistant to the Director for International and Interagency Affairs, supporting the Agency's endeavors to promote and foster collaborative research partnerships with both international research entities and other Federal disability research programs.

As a scientist and research administrator, Dr. Wilson Hill has presented nationally and internationally, to scientific and consumer audiences. She has published in peer- reviewed journals as well as contributed to the development of training modules for research and clinical professionals, consumers, and direct service providers.

In March 2005, Dr. Wilson Hill was selected as the Director of Office for Small Business Programs at the US Department of Education. In this role she provides Department-wide small business procurement oversight and technical consultation on small business policy development and execution, and leads the implementation of small business program initiatives designed to promote and expand contract opportunities for small business.

As an above-knee amputee since 1989, Dr. Wilson Hill has mentored many amputees, advocated for community-based education and promoted awareness programs.

In her spare time, Dr. Wilson Hill is an avid reader and swimmer. Through all of her experiences, Kristi is especially proud of the work she been involved in over the last 15 years as a mentor and motivational speaker, and sees herself as a role model for disabled veterans and women with disabilities.
