Technician Program
ABC technician registration is awarded as an attestation of competency for the public, those who require orthotic/prosthetic services, and those in other health professions. The awarding of ABC technician registration provides the registered technician with an appropriate and meaningful recognition of professional competence.
Eligibility Requirements:
Candidates for ABC technician registration may meet one of two pathways. A complete description of the eligibility requirements may be found in the Technician Book of Rules.
Pathway 1:
Completion of an NCOPE accredited orthotic and/or prosthetic technician program.
Pathway 2:
Two years of technician experience in the discipline seeking registration under the direct supervision of an ABC certified practitioner.

Technician Exam Cycles:
There are three technician exam cycles, Spring, Summer and Fall of each year.
Application Deadline Dates:
There are three application deadlines each year, the deadlines for the technician examination are typically 8 weeks prior to the examination date.

Exam Content:
The ABC examinations are based on the Practice Analysis of the Disciplines of Orthotics and Prosthetics. This document is based on a survey conducted by a task force of ABC certified practitioners of the daily activities of registered technicians. Five domains of practice as well as specific tasks, knowledge and skill statements were identified and are used to construct examinations. Copies of the Practice Analysis are available from ABC.
Credentials Awarded:
Technicians who successfully complete the education and/or experience and examination requirements prescribed by ABC are conferred the credentials of Registered Orthotic Technician (RTO) or Registered Prosthetic Technician (RTP). The credential of Registered Prosthetic-Orthotic Technician (RTPO) is conferred upon those technicians whose responsibilities conform to both orthotics and prosthetics and who successfully fulfill all of the requirements in both disciplines.
