ABC Certification: The Consumer's Choice

The orthotist/prosthetist is integral to the process of returning the patient to a productive and meaningful life. The education, skills and clinical knowledge required to accomplish their tasks are extensive and complex, and require considerable training. The public requires and deserves assurance that the orthotist/prosthetist is competent to provide the appropriate services. Selecting an orthotist/prosthetist certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC) ensures that you will receive care from an individual who as met the profession's most rigorous standards.

Enhancing the consumer's choice is fundamental in the American marketplace. Educated consumers are making healthcare choices based not on where they can get care most inexpensively, but where they can get the best quality care.

Certification is the standard by which the consumer can make informed decisions about the provider of his/her orthotic and/or prosthetic care. ABC certified practitioners are bound to a standard of ethical conduct which holds them accountable for their responsibilities to the patient, the physician and the profession.

Certification is not a guarantee of quality but it does indicate that the practitioner has met established standards; and since it is voluntary, it indicates a high level of dedication and commitment to the profession. When selecting your orthotist/prosthetist, make sure they have met the professions highest standards: ABC certification.
